He wonders how an otherwise good for you homo could have degenerated so quickly, and makes it a point to figure out why he died of a center attack at but 50 years of age. Dr. Omalu closely examines microscope slides of Webster's encephalon and sees evidence of astringent neurotrauma, concluding that Webster died equally a result of the long-term effects of repeated blows to the head, a disorder he terms chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). With the assist of former Steelers team doctor Julian Bailes, beau neurologist Dr. Steven DeKosky and canton coroner Dr. Cyril Wecht, Dr. Omalu publishes his findings in Neurosurgery, which are dismissed by the NFL. Soon subsequently, Strzelczyk dies in a automobile accident.

Over several years, Dr. Omalu discovers that Strzelczyk (2004) and two additional deceased NFL players, Terry Long (2005), and Andre Waters (2006), exhibited symptoms very like to Webster's. He persuades newly appointed NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to permit him to nowadays his findings before a player safety commission. Nevertheless, the NFL does not accept him seriously, and he is barred from the committee meeting, forcing the former NFL employee Bailes to requite the presentation in place of Dr. Omalu. Even so, the coming together is a set up, where the NFL claims that the players' caput trauma is unrelated to football, but rather, due to past injuries. Equally he leaves the meeting, erstwhile NFL Players Association executive Dave Duerson angrily confronts Dr. Omalu and tells him to "go back to Africa."

Dr. Omalu is subjected to considerable pressure to back downwards from his efforts, as football game is a widely beloved sport in Pittsburgh, having provided jobs and allowed men to go to higher. Wecht is subjected to a politically motivated prosecution on abuse charges, and Dr. Omalu is forced to go out Pittsburgh shortly later on, lest he be deported, or sent to prison on trivial charges as punishment for tarnishing the NFL's image. Before leaving, he urges the NFL to tell the truth. Dr. Omalu's married woman, Prema, suffers a miscarriage afterward beingness followed in her car. The Omalus are forced to leave their dream dwelling house exterior Pittsburgh, relocating to Lodi, California where he takes a job with the San Joaquin County coroner's office.

Three years later, Dr. Omalu is vindicated when Duerson commits suicide due to an increasing inability to cope with worsening cerebral function. In his suicide note, Duerson acknowledges that Dr. Omalu was correct, and offers his brain for hereafter inquiry. Dr. Omalu is invited to address an NFLPA conference on concussions and CTE. He informs them that he once wished he had never known Mike Webster, only by knowing him, he has the responsibility to inform NFL players of the true risks that they take past playing. He says that he holds no resentment for the NFL and tells them to forgive themselves and be at peace. Amongst growing scrutiny from Congress, the NFL is forced to take the concussion issue more seriously, and in 2011, NFL players sue the league for not properly informing them of the run a risk of CTE. Dr. Omalu is offered the job of Chief Medical Examiner for the District of Columbia, simply the closing credits show Omalu turning the offer down to remain with his family in Lodi, becoming naturalized equally a U.South. denizen in February 2015. Evolution [edit]

Ridley Scott's idea of an NFL concussion picture show was inspired past Dr. Bennett Omalu'southward study about old NFL stars Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, both of whom committed suicide later on suffering from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Scott was set to direct subsequently his moving picture Exodus: Gods and Kings, while he and Facio were looking for an A-list writer.[7] In November and December 2013, two more than NFL concussion films were in development, beginning Game Time Determination with writer/manager and former NFL grooming military camp attendee wide receiver Matthew A. Cherry and thespian Isaiah Washington,[8] and some other film League of Denial with producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.[9] Landesman had based his script on the 2009 GQ article Game Brain by Jeanne Marie Laskas.[ten]

Will Smith entered negotiations to star in the film in June 2014.[eleven] Smith was officially cast by the next calendar month, when Alec Baldwin entered talks to join.[12] In the months leading up to the start of production, Albert Brooks, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Luke Wilson, Bitsie Tulloch and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje would be appear as added to the cast.[13] [14] [15] [16]

Information technology received $14.3 million in motion-picture show taxation credits from Pennsylvania.[17]

Concussion grossed $34.v meg in North America and $xiv.1 million in other territories for a worldwide full of $48.half-dozen million, against a budget of $35 million.[v]

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has an approval rating of 58% based on 207 reviews, with an boilerplate rating of six.00/ten. The website's disquisitional consensus reads, "Concussion lands a solid, well-acted hitting on its impressively timely subject matter, even if its traditional, sports drama construction is a niggling besides safe to deserve a full-on trip the light fantastic in the end zone."[30] On Metacritic, the pic has a score of 55 out of 100, based on 39 critics, indicating "mixed or boilerplate reviews".[31] Audiences polled past CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A" on an A+ to F scale.[27]

Controversies [edit]

Family members of Dave Duerson, a former NFL player who suffered from CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and committed suicide, claimed the picture portrayed Duerson in a bad calorie-free. In one scene, Duerson'southward character called Omalu's character a "dishonest" in addition to telling him "to go back to Africa" and "get away from our game."[34] In some other scene, Duerson is shown mocking one-time NFL player Andre Waters when he filed an application for benefits in connection with head injuries he sustained while playing in the NFL. Duerson'due south family members called these scenes imitation. In response, Landesman, the film'southward manager, stated that the moving-picture show was "emotionally and spiritually accurate all the fashion through".[34] When asked about the accuracy of the film, CTE researcher Steven DeKosky also noted that information technology took numerous liberties.[35]

Slate science author Daniel Engber, who has been skeptical of the link betwixt CTE and the deaths of players found to have had it,[36] called the film inaccurate in other ways, for example suggesting that Wecht's arrest on corruption charges was motivated by Omalu's paper, when in fact information technology was published three months later. "[The film] feeds into a pervasive myth at the center of the national discussion over football and head injuries," he charges.[37] In particular, he cites a 2012 National Plant for Occupational Safety and Health study[38] indicating that football players, on average compared to the population as a whole, live longer and more often than not healthier lives, though the report too indicates, equally Engber concedes, that former football players are as well more likely to suffer, and dice, from neurodegenerative disease.[37]

More recent inquiry and thinking too looks at the steady accumulation of subconcussive blows, in addition to symptomatic concussions, as a major contribution factor in the development of CTE.[39] [forty] For case, a 2022 report found that each year an athlete played tackle football before age 12 predicted earlier onset of CTE symptoms past an average of two-and-a half-years, just not symptom severity. These CTE symptoms include cerebral, behavioral, and mood problems.[41] [42]

Afterward comparing the script (from the Sony Pictures hack) with the released movie, Deadspin claimed the movie was edited to appease the NFL, including reducing prominence of Roger Goodell and Paul Tagliabue in the picture show, every bit well as changing or removing dialogue.[43] [44] The New York Times discovered emails directly referencing removing "unflattering moments for the NFL" and removing "most of the bite" out of the film "for legal reasons with the NFL".[45] Landesman stated the changes were fabricated "to portray the characters and story as accurately as possible to reduce the run a risk that the league could attack the filmmakers for taking likewise much artistic license".[46]
